A Wild & Crazy (Hat) Guy!

While Jen & I were cycling along Yaxchilan Avenue (near Uxmal) one day, Jen pointed out a funky mural on a wall beside a restaurant (Los Perricos). We stopped to take a photo...

Love thy neighbor, and recycle!
... and heard someone call from the window above. It was a cheerful young man, explaining that the mural was a work celebrating love, of other people & the planet. Fittingly, he also showered us with friendly banter & welcomed us to Mexico.

When I pointed the camera up toward him, his enthusiasm (already off the charts) tripled. "Wait!" he exclaimed. "Let me get my crazy hat!"

The keeper of the flame, & the crazy hats!

Turns out this guy epitomizes Mexican friendliness & Mexican industriousness: He is an artist & musician, who, it seems, makes crazy hats (& sell food from a stall beside his mural) for a living.

Over the next few weeks, we occasionally exchanged greetings as we passed below.

And, when we got kicked out of our hostel, we stopped by to ask our new friend if he knew of any apartments for rent. He did. He suggested renting a room in a local jazz club, which would have been great, except for the owner's 24/7 smoking & the club's 8/7 music. He also suggested an apartment in which he once lived, not far from the Parque de las Palapas. We looked, we loved, & we moved in the next day.

An amigo!

Anyway, if you need a crazy hat (~$20, each lovingly fashioned from foam), just let me know. And if you need someone to cheer you up & make you smile (& if I'm not available) you know where to go!

Oh, I almost forgot to mention our amigo's name: It's Angel, of course!
