Naming Diablo

I've written elsewhere about our border collie puppy Diablo. But I want to dedicate a post to the subject of choosing Diablo's name.

A dog's name is important, albeit more for the owner than for the dog. A dog named Sue won't grow up being bullied by other dogs, but a dog named, for example, Boner or Douchebag could be a source of embarrassment to its owner.

First we googled around for potential names. Though we joked about calling him Terrorist or Maniac, we narrowed it down to two: Tio, which means Uncle, but is slang for Bugger, and Diablo, or devil.

We decided that calling a dog "Uncle" seemed a bit ridiculous, though it made some sense for a devilish dog (as in "say Uncle if you want your shoe back!"). So we settled on the other name: Diablo.

We've had him for 2 weeks now, and the name seems to fit, tho I just call him Dee for short, which is also apt: Like the little dog himself, "Dee" is seemingly innocent, but belies a terrible truth beneath...

Locals seem to like the name too. One man told us the name was "macho" & made a group of schoolchildren laugh.

Still, I feel a bit self-conscious. Mexico, remember, is an fervently Catholic country (with 90% practicing). I knew a girl once who had a dog named Freedom, & she told me once about being mortified wandering through her neighborhood yelling "Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!" when the dog escaped. Similarly, I dread the day when Diablo gets lost & we have to run around the neighborhood, giving the impression that we are trying to summon Satan.
