Looking for Market 28? This AIN'T It!

Jen & I live 5 minutes from Market 28, Cancun's main market. It's a great place to shop (Market 21 is slightly cheaper, but much smaller). Tourists flock to this place to buy everything from shot glasses & T-shirts to silver rings & porcelain pottery (photos below).

Almost every day we pass along a road called Tankah, that runs south from Market 28. And almost every day, when we return, we pass a large shop called Plaza 28. And almost every day, when we do, we see a group of white-clad men standing nearby, shouting something about Market 28 at passing tourists.

More Funny Spanish - Calzones!

Living in Cancun, I often find myself trying to communicate with Mexicans who speak very little English. Because I speak very little Spanish, I often have to try to guess what the Spanish equivalent of a word might be.

While shopping the other day I saw a sign that made me laugh. It also reminded me that attempting to communicate the way I do can be a tricky proposition.

The sign said simply... "Calzones (Boxers)."

Mmmm - calzones...

Top 5 Reasons to Shop at Walmart in Cancun

I'm not a huge fan but I find myself shopping at Walmart for the same reason most people do. It's hard to argue with the convenience (yes, there's a McDonald's in our local store) and those "everyday low prices."

So here goes my...

TOP FIVE REASONS TO SHOP AT WALMART IN CANCUN

THIS is why we love Shopping in Cancun!

SO, yesterday, after visiting fun (& uber-touristy) Market 28, Jen & I headed to our local supermarket (Chedraui) to do some shopping. We made out like bandits, scoring 6 kaiser buns, a jumbo roll of paper towel, chicken legs, a dog brush, sewing needles, 3 cakes (on sale), a 1kg box of Puffitos cereal & the biggest grapefruit I've ever seen -- all for under $20!

The best part of the trip? Antillano & Karat were doing some in-store marketing & offering free samples. There's nothing unusual about that, right? Except that Antillano & Karat make...

Rum and Vodka!

Jen & I both had vodka & cran-apple (is that still called Killer Koolaid?)... And, of course, we asked one of our fellow revelers to take some pix.

Our "Beers of the World" Poster... (Walmart Sucks)

When I moved into our hostel, I decided to hang some posters to give the place some life. I scooted over to Walmart, the only place I knew might have some.

The selection wasn't great. Of 30 options, half were Disney cartoons & the like. Still, I managed to find a few choices I thought Jen & I could live with.

I chose the Black Eyed Peas...

The Supermarket Sausage Incident

So.. Jen & I went shopping at a supermarket (Chedraui) today & picked up some groceries. Among our discoveries was some "salchicha zwan viiena." They are very tasty, only about $5/kilogram, & may be named after a cool band...

Apparently, however, you need to be very careful when you buy this stuff. You may have noticed that I wrapped the tray in a plastic bag before I snapped the photo above.

Amazing Cancun Prices

Jen & I recently met a Kansan at Walmart who seemed to think that prices in Cancun are higher than those in his hometown. Really?

Even at Walmart, whose prices are nowhere near the cheapest in Cancun, you can get:
- a 2L bottle of local tequilla for 20 pesos
- a 1L bottle of fruit juice (grape, strawberry, mango, guayaba) for 8 pesos
- 250ml of Philadelphia Cream Cheese for 13 pesos
- a 250 gram bag of local brand nacho chips for 10 pesos
- a 500 gram bag of Tostidos for 25 pesos
- board games from 100 pesos

The magazines in the photo average 40 pesos (about $3). Flip flops? ~$2.
