A few weeks ago my parents came to visit Jen & I in Cancun. They stayed at the Royal Mayan Resort (in the hotel Zone at km 17.5).
We visited several times, spending lazy afternoons lounging by the pool (which is amazing), drinking pina coloadas (about $5 during happy hour), and swimming in the ocean.
The beach here is beautiful, a vast expanse of perfect sand [though when we visited, there was an annoying 3-foot cliff-like drop-off at the high tide line].
The Royal Mayan is a time share property (part of Interval Intl). But it operates like a hotel & arranges fishing charters and tours, etc. There's also a small tuck shop near the entrance.
One funny note:
The first time we visited, we took a bus & got off with a bunch of groceries. Then we entered the hotel, walked through the reception area and past the pool, and knocked on my parents' door. My mom asked if I had received her email about signing in. We hadn't. Apparently, unless guests sign in, they aren't allowed past the front desk.
We didn't bother signing in that day. And, we didn't bother signing in the next time we visited either! Though we did see an employee standing guard at the entrance on a couple of occasions, he was never there when we arrived, so we just walked right in... not that we would ever do that again, say, to sit & relax by the pool all day ;)
One last note: asthmatics might want to avoid the lobby which smells like a flower shop. After Jen had a mild attack, we took to running through as fast as possible.
